In this episode, Benjamin Hübner, Senior Manager Manufacturing at Bosch, explains how Bosch on its Bamberg site masters the transformation in the hydrogen market and gains speed through decades of industrialization experience.

The seventh episode in short

The shift from fossil to sustainable energy sources represents a profound change, posing immense challenges even for established manufacturers. How do large corporations manage to develop the necessary speed and agility without losing their proven expertise? Benjamin Hübner from Bosch reveals how his team is driving the industrialization of hydrogen products, combining the strengths of an experienced organization with the speed of a start-up. Benjamin emphasizes that every transformation must be based on a clear and transparent strategy with people at its core. He also underlines the immense importance of trust, active participation, and constructive feedback within the team, as these factors are essential for fostering motivation and flexibility sustainably.

From the Common Rail Injector to the Hybrion PEM Electrolysis Stack

Benjamin and his team, originally responsible for manufacturing components for the automotive industry, spent years producing Common Rail Injectors in high volumes. Now, they are driving the production of the Hybrion PEM electrolysis stack. Since the Hybrion Stack, lacking a direct predecessor, must be manufactured with a significantly shorter time-to-market, they operate like a startup, adapting their processes and methods accordingly.

According to Benjamin, the key factors for our transformation's success are:

  • Motivated employees with strong skills and experience
  • Diverse teams and a large network
  • A people-centered approach
  • A transparent strategy

How we systematically built new know-how on this journey

Benjamin Hübner shares that there are various ways to acquire specialized knowledge:

  • Collaboration with Universities and Professions: Exchanging ideas with research institutions and universities can provide access to the latest findings and specialized knowledge.
  • Integration of Domain Experts: Incorporating external domain experts who bring their know-how into the team can be an effective solution.
  • Leveraging synergies: Especially within Bosch we can leverage synergies by drawing on existing expertise from other business units and departments. Often, similar problems have already been solved there, and exchanging ideas with colleagues can save us time and resources.

In just 15 weeks, we built a prototype production environment from scratch – made possible by the infrastructrues we have in-house.
