Hydrogen direct injection technology
Along with fuel cell-electric and battery-electric applications, the hydrogen engine represents an equally important powertrain technology of the future. In this context, Bosch’s technology for the direct injection of hydrogen serves as an efficient means of achieving significant reductions in the emissions of internal-combustion engines. With direct injection, hydrogen is injected directly into the combustion chamber, allowing for optimal mixture formation. This technology is crucial for maximizing the efficiency and performance of hydrogen engines in the commercial vehicle segment.
The core component of this system is the innovative Bosch injector for low-pressure direct injection (HIDI). It is specifically designed to meet the highest demands for robustness and life time requirement of 1.6 million kilometers. A key design feature is its internal media separation, which protects moving components from hydrogen. This, along with encapsulated lubrication and optimized material pairings, ensures minimal wear. A dedicated mechatronic control system with integrated software also guarantees maximum dosing accuracy throughout its entire lifespan, making the injector a highly reliable and precise core element for the hydrogen powertrain.
Hydrogen port-fuel injection technology
The hydrogen engine offers a robust alternative for reducing CO2 emissions from combustion engine powertrains, making it a key technology in the future powertrain mix alongside battery-electric and fuel cell systems. One established method for fueling these engines is hydrogen port fuel injection. With this technology, gaseous hydrogen is injected into the intake manifold, where it mixes with air before entering the combustion chamber.
For the development of a hydrogen engine, Bosch supports manufacturers with a comprehensive portfolio of hardware, software, and service solutions, ensuring the perfect interaction of all components. This holistic system approach includes specially adapted sensors and actuators, as well as components for the ignition and exhaust-gas treatment systems. For port fuel injection, Bosch provides application-specific injectors for medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles. As a key part of this integrated system, these components are characterized by their robustness and ensure the reliability of the entire powertrain, enabling a rapid and effective introduction of hydrogen engines.
